Complete walkthrough
6 chapters from the opening stage through completion.
Yoshi's Island
Learn the movement basics, rescue Yoshi and clear the first castle.
- Clear Yoshi's Island 1 and visit the Yellow Switch Palace before advancing.
- Use Yoshi's tongue to collect distant items and dismount for an extra mid-air jump.
- At Iggy's Castle, climb the fence sections patiently and knock Iggy into the lava.
Yellow Switch activated and Iggy defeated.
Donut Plains
Open the first branching routes and learn how secret exits work.
- Take the green pipe in Donut Plains 1 with the Cape Feather to reach its secret key.
- Use the cape to fly above Donut Secret 1 and unlock the path toward Star Road.
- Complete the Green Switch Palace so green outline blocks produce Cape Feathers.
Green Switch active and both routes to Morton's Castle open.
Vanilla Dome and Butter Bridge
Navigate underground mazes, moving platforms and the red Switch Palace route.
- Search Vanilla Dome 1 for the key exit to reveal Vanilla Secret 1.
- Carry a blue shell to Yoshi in Star World stages whenever you need temporary flight.
- On Cheese Bridge Area, use Yoshi and the cape to reach the hidden goal under the normal gate.
Red Switch active and Ludwig's Castle cleared.
Forest of Illusion
Solve the looping map by finding keys instead of only normal goals.
- Forest of Illusion 1's key opens Forest Ghost House; keep a cape for safer exploration.
- In Forest Ghost House, use the P-Switch door route to reach the secret goal.
- Find Forest of Illusion 3's key exit to reveal Roy's Castle and escape the loop.
Roy defeated and the path to Chocolate Island unlocked.
Chocolate Island and Valley of Bowser
Handle route-changing levels and finish the main castle sequence.
- Chocolate Island 2 changes by coins collected, enemies defeated and elapsed time; move quickly for alternate rooms.
- Use the secret exit in Valley of Bowser 2 to reach the final Star Road entrance.
- In Bowser's Castle choose door pairs that match your strongest skills; the middle routes are usually the most direct.
Bowser defeated and Princess Peach rescued.
Star Road, Special World and 96 exits
Complete every alternate goal and the hardest optional stages.
- Each Star World course has a key exit that continues the loop; the normal exit is not enough.
- Clear all eight Special World stages to transform the overworld and enemy appearances.
- Revisit every flashing red map node and Ghost House until the save counter reaches 96.
All 96 exits recorded.
Secrets and field notes
Useful details for cleaner runs and full completion.
Infinite lives in Top Secret Area
Unlock the area above Donut Ghost House, enter with a cape and collect the repeated 1-Up cycle whenever needed.
Blue Yoshi shortcut
A Blue Yoshi can fly while holding any shell, making several Star Road key exits much easier.
Exit counter rule
Some stages contain two exits. The completion number counts exits, not visible level nodes.
Frequently asked questions
Fast answers to common progression problems.
How many exits are in Super Mario World?
There are 96 exits. Several stages and Ghost Houses have both a normal and a secret exit.
Do I need every exit to fight Bowser?
No. You can finish the main story with far fewer exits, while Star Road can also create a very short route to Bowser.
Why does Forest of Illusion keep looping?
Normal goals often return to the same route. Find the key and keyhole exits to reveal the real path forward.
