Complete walkthrough
6 chapters from the opening stage through completion.
Worlds 1 and 2
Learn map items, Raccoon flight and desert hazards.
- Use World 1 to practice filling the P-meter and uncover the white-block route that helps reveal a Warp Whistle.
- In Desert Land, wait out the angry sun's arc and keep a leaf for pyramid and fortress rooms.
Grass Land and Desert Land cleared.
World 3: Water Land
Navigate swimming stages, bridges and the wandering royal boat.
- Use Frog Suits for underwater stages but switch back before land-heavy fortresses.
- Clear the bridge network methodically and preserve a fire flower for enemies that block narrow water routes.
Water Land airship cleared.
World 4: Giant Land
Handle giant enemies and alternate-size stage layouts.
- Large enemies still follow familiar patterns, but require more landing space and safer jump timing.
- Search for doors that swap between giant and normal versions to reach alternate items and exits.
Giant Land cleared.
World 5: Sky Land
Climb from the ground into a long aerial route.
- Keep a Tanooki or Raccoon suit for controlled landings on small cloud platforms.
- On the tower climb and airship, prioritize the next stable surface over optional coins.
Sky Land cleared.
Worlds 6 and 7
Cross Ice Land and solve Pipe Land's maze-like routes.
- On ice, release the D-pad earlier than normal and use fireballs against enemies in narrow corridors.
- Map Pipe Land's entrances carefully; some pipes loop while P-Switches and hidden blocks reveal progress.
Ice Land and Pipe Land cleared.
World 8: Dark Land
Survive tanks, ships, Hand Traps, fortress and Bowser's Castle.
- Use stored P-Wings or Clouds on stages that cost repeated lives, but save at least one strong suit for the castle.
- In Bowser's room, bait ground pounds over breakable bricks until he opens a path through the floor.
Bowser defeated and the Mushroom World restored.
Secrets and field notes
Useful details for cleaner runs and full completion.
Warp Whistles
Three whistles exist in the early game. They open Warp Zone access and can create a very short route to World 8.
White Mushroom Houses
Collecting the required coins in certain stages causes a special Mushroom House to appear on the map.
Tanooki statue
Press down with the Tanooki Suit to become a statue temporarily, avoiding many attacks and revealing a few special interactions.
Frequently asked questions
Fast answers to common progression problems.
How do I fly with Raccoon Mario?
Run while holding B until the P-meter fills, then tap A repeatedly to gain height.
Can I save progress in the original NES game?
The original cartridge did not use a normal save system. On OldGames, use emulator save states when you need to continue later.
How do I damage Bowser?
You do not need to attack him directly. Bait his ground pound so he breaks the brick floor beneath himself.
