About Tekken 3

Namco's third Tekken moved the story a generation past Tekken 2 and replaced most of the cast in the process. Jin Kazama, Ling Xiaoyu, Hwoarang, Eddy Gordo, Bryan Fury and Julia Chang join returning fighters such as Paul, Nina, Lei, Yoshimitsu and Heihachi. Matches are one-on-one, best-of-three rounds by default, with the four face buttons mapped to left arm, right arm, left leg and right leg rather than to punch strengths.

The structural change from earlier Tekken games is the sidestep. Tapping up or down slides your fighter into the foreground or background, so long linear strings can be made to whiff entirely and pure offence no longer wins by default. Jump height was lowered, reversals were extended across the cast, and juggles became the payoff instead: land a launcher and keep the opponent airborne. The PlayStation version adds Tekken Force and Tekken Ball on top of the arcade ladder.

Why play Tekken 3

Because the arcade board, Namco's System 12, was built on PlayStation-derived hardware, the home conversion lands unusually close to the coin-op instead of being an obvious downgrade, which was rare for 3D fighters of that generation. Namco then added modes the arcade never had and hung unlockables off them: clearing Tekken Force four times and beating him opens Dr. Bosconovitch, while Gon comes out of Tekken Ball mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock all the characters in Tekken 3?

Most of the roster comes from repeatedly clearing arcade mode, which adds one fighter at a time in the order Kuma, Julia, Gun Jack, Mokujin, Anna, Bryan, Heihachi, Ogre and True Ogre. Panda and Tiger are unlocked from the character select screen instead. Dr. Bosconovitch is tied to finishing Tekken Force four times and beating him, and Gon comes from Tekken Ball.

What is Tekken Force mode in Tekken 3?

A side-scrolling beat-em-up built on the fighting engine. You walk your chosen fighter through four stages of Mishima soldiers using the normal moveset, with your health bar carrying over between stages. Completing it four times and defeating him at the end unlocks Dr. Bosconovitch.

What changed between Tekken 2 and Tekken 3?

Tekken 3 added the sidestep, giving fights a depth axis instead of a flat plane, lowered jump height, extended reversals to the whole cast, and made juggle combos the main damage source. It also retired most of the Tekken 2 cast in favour of Jin, Xiaoyu, Hwoarang, Bryan and Eddy.
