Advance Wars on Game Boy Advance (GBA), playable online with save states, gamepad and mobile touch support.
Turn-based war on a grid, made by the studio behind Fire Emblem. Every map is a scatter of cities, bases, airports and ports; infantry and mechs capture them, captured property pays you funds at the start of each turn, and those funds buy the units you deploy from bases. Damage comes out of unit matchups, remaining HP, the defence stars of the terrain a unit is standing on, and the commanding officer you brought.
Each army is fronted by a CO whose passive skill bends that math — Max's direct-combat units carry a 50% firepower bonus while his artillery and rockets lose a square of range, Grit's indirect units gain both range and firepower, Sami captures 50% faster and her footsoldiers punch above their cost. Damage dealt and taken fills a meter that triggers a one-turn CO Power. Beyond the campaign there is War Room score attack, a map designer and local multiplayer.
This is the entry before Super CO Powers existed, so matches swing on positioning and unit trades rather than on banking two escalating supers. The campaign works as a very long tutorial that keeps adding rules — fog of war, capture rates, transports, resupply — while the scored War Room maps are where most of the replay value sits.
You can play with keyboard, gamepad, or touch (on mobile). The default keyboard layout is below; remap any key inside the emulator settings.
Andy. He has no penalty on any unit type, and his CO Power, Hyper Repair, restores two HP across your whole army, which forgives bad trades. Max is the other forgiving pick if you intend to win with tanks and infantry rather than artillery.
Super CO Powers were introduced in the sequel, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. In this first game every CO has a single power on one meter, so the decision is only when to spend it, not whether to hold out for a stronger second option.
No. Re-Boot Camp is the 2023 Nintendo Switch remake, developed by WayForward, with new 3D visuals and voiced COs. This is the original Game Boy Advance release, out in North America on 10 September 2001 and in Europe in January 2002; Japan never got it standalone, receiving it in 2004 inside Game Boy Wars Advance 1+2.
